Why can some ships stop immediately?

Define ship, in this case.
To stop a 300 meter tanker takes more or less work depending upon what's in its holds. I don't think a full tanker can stop in less than a mile.

It is my understanding that commercial ship's are required to be able to stop within 15 times their length.

Reverse jet bucket shot? Or POD drives ?

Docking port side like a champ.

Thanks for your response!

I don't know how fast a reverse-pitch reaction can be without damaging the propeller. It probably depends on the propeller's scale and the type of reversing mechanism.

Nothing stops immediately. In theory, a theoretically rigid body could impact another theoretically rigid object of infinite mass and stop immediately. In the physical world there is always a delay.

What I saw was that a submarine model could come to a stop. I'm also now questioning whether this video was generated by AI.

Everything can come to a stop. It takes different lengths of time though.

Found from Google and Gemini:

Here's a video on some techniques for stopping a ship.

It discusses high frequency rudder cycling and low frequency rudder cycling; about 5 to 7 ship lengths.

Crash stopping on two anchors usually rips the winlass out of the deck, but 1.5 ship lengths.
