If there are any boat designers/NA that you can recommend, especially those with a background in traditional sailing vessels, steel hulls, and USCG certification, please let me know.

Iver Franzen, NA, is in Annapolis. His most recent project was the Maryland Dove; he's very experienced with sail vessels. We worked with him on a smaller yacht project some years back.

That was my first reaction too, John. Even in my little marine engineering firm, our lowest daily rate exceeds $1100..... Might be a geographical thing?

I don't think you can get any reputable NA or Engineer for less than $180/hr

<shrug> Don't know, but that's what it worked out to on the last bid estimate I was involved in (i.e. cost/man-days), I would need to go dig for the man-hour rate. Also, this is a bid estimate, not after all the change orders....where the real money is made.

FWIW when I retired in 2018 from the shipyard, we were $650 a man-day normalized, but some overhead was a different pot of money. Location, and AUKUS, may also explain this.

And it is not geographically dependent either. My time, is my time, no matter where in the world i end up

Our highest rate is $186., engineering specialist. We still charge about $156/hour for field engineering support..our lowest rate.

This is not a field inspection, but a more complicated redesign and compliance with regulations and laws. I think your higher rate applies.

We don't do much "field inspection"; our field engineers are out there assisting with the installation, setting to work, and sea trialing vessels with our control systems. Out higher rate always applies when we're involved in vessel designs from, usually, ground up, including model testing support in many cases.
