Question on Tornado hull side plan

I plan to change my Strike 20 outriggers only to decrease the weight of the boat.
Nacra 5.8 are perfect shape but too heavy !
I plan to build ply , self designed hard chine outriggers. The reason is they are easier to design, and you can design more volume than tortured ply.

You can get better volume and smoother lines with a strip planked construction.
Could be lighter weight also.


Actually I once calculated a 2000# displacement for one hull for the Tornado. That ought to be enough for most any open trimaran.

Patrick, with all these outriggers using donor or building your own for the Strike 20, where is the dagger-board or centerboard you are using? do you use any in the outriggers or just one in the center hull?

I closed the daggerboard trunks in Nacra outrigger, but I have found it is better to have the rudders on outriggers. Indeed with central rudder we ventilate/ lose control when lifting the mainhull.
About strip planking, I agree, but it is too much work for my taste !

Tornados were but within tolerances. Through the years they went from small hulls...... to fat at the front...... and fat in the middle......

Not sure where the Mastrom ones ended up
