What happened to Autocad?

Siemens is an official "Partner" of Ineos Team UK.

Why would you expect an America's Cup team to use AutoCAD?

Maybe if they hadn't messed with the classic toolbar layout a few years ago..........

Just a reminder:

All Autodesk apps are FREE for "Student Edition". SEs are fully powered with all bells and whistles, and run EXACTLY THE SAME on your PC, at full speed, etc. The ONLY diff is you can't EXPORT files to professional full lic system, or send to any CAM machine, and if you do it will run wild on that system "painting" files that will need some "unlock" intervention by Autodesk Inc.

But you CAN do as much "thinking" on SE as you wish, including paper printouts, and share SE files with other SEs.

Its all about Market Share and number of semi-committed users. They want "I know some Autodesk" showing up on more resumes than their competition, which in turn will goad The Boss to buy instead of competition.

Because it's most used and standardised for engineers.
At least where I come from, drawings on the Technical University Delft are made with Autocad.
I know the instructor/professsor personaly.

But, As you suggested, Ineos signed a contract with Siemens as their official partner.
Looks like an expert system with less freedom than Autocad.

Siemens NX (unigraphics before) has been used by many of the big boatbuilders for years (over 20) as it is a world class 3D modeling system, I also bet that the team does very few drawings, it’s almost all digital data nowadays,

Depends on the industry and size of the company. I'm not aware of any auto manufacturers who use Autocad. Siements NX is used by several auto manufacturers. Autocad is widely used in architecture and building construction.

As mudsailor suggested the Ineos team may be doing very few 2D drawings. The very large auto manufacturer I worked for stopped using 2D drawings almost twenty years ago.

Looks like an expert system with less freedom than Autocad.

Less freedom ????

It's basic and I grew up with it, In process industry it's widely used.
Even required to get an engineering contract.
Guess it depends on the country as well.
