Hull Model Interface for the CFD Software MICHLET 9.33

    This article demonstrates a simple process for generating hull models for MICHLET 9.33 in Spline Formats, and using Python to extract and display wave pattern plots.

    Remarks:

    The MICHLET software provides a fast method for estimating wave resistance. It only requires sectional shape data to perform CFD calculations, without the need for time-consuming CFD modeling. When combined with our modern hull form modification and design software, it is particularly well-suited for early-stage hull optimization.

    However, one aspect I find questionable is that the software automatically adjusts the sectional shape values (e.g., waterline breadth) based on the specified displacement, length, and draft — resulting in a discrepancy between the input and the actual model used in the calculation. In addition, the software relies on keyboard shortcuts for operation, which is not very user-friendly.

    Hi @bingli your hull look stretched because you included the offsets above the waterline. Remove those and you'll see everything is fine.

    Btw, don't present Michlet as if it's your software or that others could think you are the developer which is @Leo Lauzauskas.

    I’ll review the draft and offset settings carefully — I appreciate your reminder. You're right that the appearance can vary depending on how the data is interpreted, though I believe Michlet does handle offsets above the waterline if configured correctly.

    Also, just to clarify, I’m not the developer of Michlet — all credit goes to Dr. Leo Lazauskas. I simply created a small interface from our hull design tool to Michlet to assist in preliminary evaluations.

    However, one aspect I find a bit puzzling is that the software seems to automatically adjust sectional shapes (e.g., waterline beam) to match the specified displacement, length, and draft — which can result in discrepancies between the input and the actual model used in the calculation. Is this expected behavior, or is there a way to preserve the exact input geometry?

    Hi Bingli,
    don't worry it was just a hint as it might appear to some readers as if you are the developer.

    Michlet only needs to know the underwater portion of the hull, so I would assume the values length, beam etc. should be token only from the underwaterbody of the hull. When I made contact with Mitchlet for the first time I had the same issue, maybe I didn't read the manual well enough or it isn't clearly mentioned in it.
