High end vs low end cruising catamaran

    Hi Mulkari. We would love to see photos of your current cat. They would give us a better idea of what you are looking for. Besides the lack of payload capacity and room, is there anything else you dislike about your current cat?

    Building a bigger boat is not just about the surface area. All the panels and structural parts are heavier and need more people. It is not impossible to build it on you own, but it will require fabricating gear to lift and position heavy parts.

    It basically does nearly everything I want, but for long term cruising it is just too small. Definitely doable, but it would really limit what you can bring onboard. Also have to be very careful with sail area if winds get stronger. At about 20 - 25 knot wind when sailing to windward with full sail it is quite possible to flip it. Sailing North Atlantic in such light cat could easily end upside down. Larger boat would be more forgiving because righting moment increase much faster than sail area. Although any performance cat can be flipped if sailed recklessly just have to live with that.

    I would get help when heavy parts need fitted. People who sail with me also will help me when needed.

    Mulkari. A suggestion to see if this is closer to what you want. Eric Lerouge design of the VIK 119 is 39 x 23.9 foot with a draft of 3 foot and a weight 7,300 lbs and a displacement of 10800 lbs. Mast 49.5 foot carrying a mainsail of 580 square foot, jib of 330 square foot and a spinnaker of 940 square foot. Foam glass poly or vinylester. Could do daggerboards if required

    Thats a nice cat you built. I'm in a similar situation the 25' tri I built a while back suited me well for years but as retirement draws closer I am contemplating a larger replacement. KISS is great and helps keep boating 'affordable'.     Hi Mulkari. That pic and vid were helpful in understanding what you are looking for. I like your priorities, the way you think, and your spartan cat. I've come up with a couple ideas that you may wish to consider IF you are still around. Have you determined your budget max for a completed new build? That would be helpful for us to know to throw options your way.

    One of my major limitations is final assembly must be done at water side because my build site is about 20 km from nearest suitable water for launch so it rules out most stock designs. I really like Wharram cats because of this, but I definitely want more performance oriented hull shape and other improvements. Since I plan to sail a lot in colder climate I would like an arrangment with living space in one hull and mostly storage in other. Heating one hull is much easier and efficient than heating both hulls and bridgedeck cabin. That leads to larger than usual boat which is also good for performance and load carrying capability.

    Budget would be somewhere around 100 - 150k Euro. My 9.5 m cat cost me around 10k to get to sailable condition with cheap second hand sails. Later I upgraded to brand new sails which cost 7k. As expected new sails made big difference when going upwind, but downwind there is only small improvement. If high end upwind performance is not critical then cheap second hand dacron sails seems to be perfectly adequate.
    Goal would be to get to sailable condition with second hand gear and then upgrade later stuff that's found to be inadequate. Most of the cost is equipment bolted on the boat so if that is kept to basics and second hand stuff used wherever acceptable it should be possible to keep cost relatively low.

    I like your thought processes. Keep eliminating expensive things and focussing on what you want/need and see where you end up.

    Mulkari. Besides performance hull shape, what are those other improvements you wish to make? Will you be building inside with a concrete floor or outside under a tarp? How long do you anticipate it will take to complete? I'm struck by how inexpensive your current boat was to build compared with how much you expect to spend on this future build; why so much more? Regarding your 1.5x your current displacement goal, I'm guessing even a 13 meter boat will render a displacement of 2x plus, which wouldn't be a bad thing. There is a prominent US designer who has been designing tube cats for over 3 decades. He can do slight mods to stock plans for little extra cost. He is known for least costly high performance cruising hulls with a quick build system which are worth looking at IF you are clever and have build skills above average, do not require perfection, and can live with slight variations between hull builds.

    Do the right thing and insulate the hull, regardless of what it's made of.
    Dix has a ply cat where he fits EPS between the stringers and follows up with a thin ply panel glued on top. This way you achieve a smooth interior, wich is a big thing for stringer frame ply builds.
    If you go composite you can carve a male mold out of foam and sculpt the interior into it afterwards. With intelligent design this way you could even build the hulls single skin using polyester resin, wich would probably be the cheapest.

    I am going to say the heretical thing: for a true cruiser buying diesel is more advantageous then buying new high performance sails. Even at 2€/l diesel will economically be better. Your boat will be big enough to need proper inboards anyway, so there's no added cost for the engines.

    EPS Eeeek, the squeaking in a seaway would drive me insane ! And just about any useful glue dissolves it. Pass.
