FRP material testing center in Philippines.

    Dear Seniors all over the Philippines,

    Do you happen to know any frp material testing center here in the Philippines that would do the following tests for classification purposes? If none, would you like to recommend other options on how to know if the boat being built qualifies standard strength requirements.
    Tensile strength: 98 N/mm2
    Bending strength: 150 N/mm2
    Shearing strength

    I asked a friend in England (who has lots of contacts in the Philippines) if he knows of any FRP testing centres in the Philippines, and he suggested asking Michael Storer who is an active boat designer based in the Philippines.

    We use to have our material tested by MIRDC in Bicutan, Manila but most independent testing lab that do Standard material testing on steel and concrete should have the equipment.

    Although relatively cheap at P1,500 per sample laminate. you need to do 7 test per material with test on,
    1. Ultimate Tensile strength
    2. Ultimate Compression strength
    3. Modulus tensile
    4. Modulus compression
    5. In plane shear

    The modulus 3 and 4 can be derived from 1 and 2 if you ask for a graph test instead of just ultimate strength. Youngs modulus is actually the theoretical straight line projected on the back of the curve. 7 test per specimen is required to arrive at a certain confidence level. Actually, only 5 is averaged. You throw away the result of the highest and lowest.
    So that will be P1,500per x 7times x 3test for one type of fiber. Flexular test is optional as it can be predicted by the formula. There are three major types of fiber, namely CSM, WR, and Uni. Multiply that by three. Then there is E glass, S glass, Kevlar, and Carbon. Then there is the resin to be used like Ortho, Iso, Vynil Ester, and Epoxy.

    So unless you have tons of money to throw around testing materials, there is a way to calculate strength by the use of Formula(s). You either use Lloyds, BV, or ISO method. Or you could use the minimum values specified by LR, DNV, ISO and use materials that comes with a certificate that it is certified by so and so. Good luck on that as the local suppliers advertises their products (especially in Cebu) as Certified but could not produce any certificate. I tested their materials and came to about 80% only of minimum required value. Only 1 passed.
