I've been building sportfish in North Carolina for about 10 years now. Wood epoxy plank on frame. I'm looking to start another project. I may be willing to travel and help / teach you how to build a hull. I've worked for some of the best builders in NC including Jim Luxton (founder of Jerrit Bay) I have plans from 24' to 46' feet. I have completed a 24' hull for a charter boat fisherman in Key West, it should be ready to hit the water soon. I've also built a 28' hull for Carolinian Boatworks. The trim carpanters and finish guys are working on it now. Before that I framed 6 boats for Gillikin Custom boats on Harkers Is. NC

    For Squid Kid

    Squid Kid,

I have plans and and a jig for sale - in 2 weeks time I can have it cut and at your doorstep. The jig can be shipped anywhere in the country. You may call me to discuss if you'd like, and I can show you what the boat looks like, drawings, jig, etc. through a webmeeting if you are interested. Most of my work involves sportfishing boats/yachts. I did the design for the B&D 28 and 34 models, and at one time ran the engineering dept. for Buddy Davis.

    Kitto,

In addition to my last message, I can have the jig shipped anywhere in the world. I have put several jigs on containerships to go overseas, so it can be arranged fairly easily and at reasonable cost.

    Shorebreak,
When building on a jig how do you get the plywood to form the the jig? How do you determine the angle at which the plywood needs to be cut?
    Thanks,
    Squid kid

    Plywood

The jig is set up to provide spacing close enough to bridge the plywood without unwanted deformation between frames. Many jigs will be setup to facilitate longitudinal batons on the hullsides that further limit deformation and act as stiffeners on the interior (to remain after the jig is removed). The plywood seams should be run at 45° between sheer and chine to bridge these frames, and each layer of plywood should be at opposing angles. Using at least 2 layers is recommended. I have found that sometimes large sheets may be used aft but moving forward requires narrow strips to help conform to the shape. Obviously, what is required will be driven by how the jig is designed.

    Hope that helps
