CSM vs 1/2" milled fibers

I had to cut out some delaminated CSM with gel coat on top.

I was just going to put CSM back in the repair, but I started to think.

What if I just used my 1/2 or 1" chopped fibers and mixed it in my resin to make cat hair and just put that in. It would make fairing it out much easier.

The problem is, I am not sure it they are equal in strength or not. I am assuming it really doesn't matter as the core below is the structural piece and the CSM is just there for weather proofing.

It's on the deck of a boat, 1/2" plywood core. The deck is just gel coat over CSM. It's a TwinVee, finish is similar to a carolina Skiff.

Use CSM, it will be stronger and lay down better.

Ok, well that would be "flow coat" rather than gelcoat. It isn't a critical repair, but to get the best adhesion, brush a little resin on to it, before adding the CSM or your milled fibres "putty", I would use the former.

thanks folks, it's not very wide, so I am going to lay down some csm then go over with the milled fiber putty, this should give me a strong and smoother finish.

No need for the putty.

Fill it with CSM and sand it smooth....done.

Coat it with gel coat or paint.
