CNC Plug

Anyone had a plug CNC milled lately? Idea of current cost?

 

Sadly my data is from 2012, so definitely not useful or accurate.

Wind power was most of the outfits work and they appear to have gone through a merger and been shuttered. On the hunt for a new place.

At the time it was about 125 a square foot for low use mold, 15 dollars extra a ft for injectable mold. As the resilience of the mild went up a full production mould was near 200 a square foot. It was useful for some parts but for us our hull form was not super complex and was significantly cheaper traditional. We had the tunnel and skeg cut.

Those were west coast USA numbers but gulf and great lakes were all in the mix.

 

Foam / MDF raw machined, $65 to $95 sqft
Foam, putty, primed plug $125 to $200
quality production molds, $125 to $200 sqft

 

Curious as to region/country for those numbers?

Realize that lots of prices have stabilized across regions but gulf vs WA state can vary a fair bit.

 

East coast United States

 

Started hand building plug. Power catamaran. 8 ft section of the middle sponsons and tunnel. Will pull mold from 8 ft sections and glass sections together for desired length.

Low cost glass and epoxy vendor?

 

Use polyester.

 

Unless you have extremely limited working space,it is very perverse to build sections and glass them together.The finishing will be a nightmare.It would be less trouble to add a flange at each end of the section and then you can bolt the sections together.The same flange can be used for the adjacent section if you make a template of the actual hull shape to assist alignment.Once assembled,you will have a lot less finishing to do.
