    Hi
We have inherited a 6.5 meter 1500 Kg Rescue Boat, AluSafe MOB (man over board) 700RB.

It has an aluminium Hull and the sponsons and Hull are filled with foam. It has a Volvo Penta TAMD 31 p a turbo diesel that puts out 149hp.
Cruises at 25 knots and top speed a bit over 31knots.
We are setting it up for camping , fishing , wakeboarding etc. it has a nice clear flat deck. I’m a bit injuries so it’s good. It’s very stable but when the trade winds kick in in summer it would be great to hoist a sail to would be really nice if we could hoist a sail and travel down the coast and visit the towns. . We are near Sydney. I miss sailing, especially at night with the stars. Would it be possible to make this thing sail? It’s a deep V hull and has a huge strong ransom to hang a rudder. What do you think?

If you are OK at 2 mph, it is possible. However, that would mean 48 miles a day.

An auxiliary dipping lug sail as advocated by Phil Bolger. This rig was intended to be lowered and the mast re-stepped on the other side with every tack. 17 sq m of sail on a 9 x 2m boat. flyingsplinter.jpg

Realistically, submerged transoms create a lot of drag, with a modest sail that is no risk of upsetting the boat, it will have little chance of exceeding walking pace. The current will have as much effect as your sail.

Is it possible to reduce the drag?

Ye nice. I’ll look at this later. Our boat is not as sleek at 6.5m x2.5. But this is exactly what I mean. Any spectacle on this boat?

No, not really, moving or placing weight forward helps a bit, but that can create other issues.

    Hi. Thanks
Could I not make something that would reduce the drag at the transom? I’ll take more photos in the morning . There is a lip where the hull goes beyond the transom. Then there is a frame extending over the back beyond the jet nozzle. Could I not make something that reduces stage here? I’ll get some photos in the morning? Cheers

No, that won't help for sailing, you need a less abrupt stern treatment, and that is hard to do in a short length.
