Made the trip to the Chassahowitka River and bay, slight negative tide, low, very low. Pulled the motor up, poled many very shallow mangrove areas, caught a few snook, a few Redfish, then out to the bay and a big Jack in a couple feet of water. A NE wind ( 20 knots, 2-2 1/2 waves) blew us out and we made it to the channel markers ( to shallow to put the motor down).

The boat performed excellent in the shallows, handled well in the bay chop. Slow but steady and stable. B413C3CC-F4A7-4BF1-9220-6D45242CCF23.jpeg 40AE9012-F3D5-436F-98C3-4511B9F664CF.jpeg B2D33023-E727-4BDD-9338-A11C4D918B53.jpeg

Back in the Chassahowitka, more negative tides, I put a set of of 9 ft oars on it, performing great in 6” of water( and even less with the pole), got stuck only once. 6CE91A46-9DA7-4113-8928-3AA9DA099EEC.jpeg 7C17853E-16B3-423D-8A2C-47773FAF9574.jpeg

Last day, a nice Red, Homossasa River outlet, south, deep in the backwater shallows, where the mangroves give way to the marsh grasses. D7140C1B-4DA2-4038-8220-AC695E7952DA.jpeg

Well, the boat did well again. Stayed in the Chassahowitka river and very shallow creeks. The cold weather ( 35 degrees one morning) pushed all kinds of fish into it. Reds, Snook, Sheepshead, Trout, and Sail fin cat. We motored to the inlets- rowed into the low tide areas ( sometimes just inches) so as to not spook them, then poled further. Dozens of fish caught, sight fishing, but the Snook was out of season, closed- and the Red limit was only one per person….and yes the FL game wardens were out, they really didn’t know what to think of the boat.

Latest update: with the 6 HP outboard, two of us ( me 180- son 150 lbs) we clocked 10-11 mph on GPS. My son, alone, hit 14 mph. Problem, even with a 7 gal water container upfront ( 56 lbs), the bow is way, way high up, with half the hull out of water.

What is a solution to the extreme bow up, one person ( at full throttle) attitude? Trim tabs? Flotation sections attached to the transom? I have no idea, but need an economical fix. The Yamaha 6 HP weighs 60 lbs.

We did get caught on our recent trip in 2-2 1/2 foot choppy, waves out past the bay….a huge storm….we made it to the mangroves, I thought we wouldn’t. Tide was going out, heavy winds blowing in….motivates me to put flotation ( foam) in it. That said, caught 20-22” Triple Tail, limited out. IMG_3310.jpeg

My current set-up. With both of us, I can get through 4-5” of water rowing with 8ft oars, engine out of the water. Me up front, the kid on the back deck. Perfect for the low tides, the Reds are plentiful….my concern is when he goes out alone, he has no concept of C.G. and extreme bow up attitude.
