What a system...boy, you just couldn't do that today. Stuff like that makes me nostalgic for the part of Canada I grew up in, where payment for every favour was in salmon and sixpacks of Lucky or O'Keefe's beer and everyone used words like skookum, kloosh, chuck and mesachie in everyday speech.

Although moving back to small town Canada after many years in big cities, I've found that there still exists a network of blue collar guys that are still just like that and after blowing up my last Johnson (well, smashing the steering shaft and some other parts on a submerged log) that's who turned up spares. Took three days to get back on the water. So maybe a version of that still exists...it just went underground.

Anyway one upside to running old wrecker motors: when I smashed that leg a couple of weeks ago, the total outlay for motors to get two complete running examples was $150. If I'd smashed just the lower on a new Tohatsu or something, presumably I'd still be putting at least a grand on the table to get rolling again.
