Problems with my 2 stroke 6hp evinrude

    Hi new member here also new boat owner, I’m not exactly sure where to post this thread in here but I’ve recently purchased a 12ft Jon boat that came with a 95/96’ 6hp evinrude. The outboard starts up and runs idles fine on cold start but once you put it into gear and twist the lever, the engine slowly idles down almost stalling..... until WOT then it picks up speed and your on your way. But if left on half-throttle or 3/4 it would stall. Also it would stall if low rpm in gear, would always have to use choke to start it back up. The things I’ve done so far was replace the fuel pump, replaced the lower unit oil, spark plugs. I took the carb out and looked at it and it looked super clean, no gunk anywhere, bowl looks good, float looks good (could be some gunk in the jets?, maybe I should of cleaned the jets with a piece of wire from a wire brush) I did notice that on the outside of the float bowl was really oily, hmm. Oh well I put everything back. And starts and idles fine, would have to hammer it right away to get going otherwise It would stall. Like I’ve said, I’m new to boating, this is my first boat ever with a outboard. I’ve search all over the web and couldn’t find any symptoms like mines so hopefully someone can shine on light on this. I could probably live with this but if I can fix it, I’d would want to fix it. Thanks.

    First of all, don't use wires in the jets. The carburetor should be disassembled and cleaned with carb cleaner. You need the type that is liquid and all the carb and parts get submerged in for a day. Inspect the jets and other parts for damage. Adjust the carburetor to specs according to the manual. Also, use the manual to check the timing and reset if necessary.

    It sounds like the idle speed is set too low, easily remedied, don't tinker with carburettors !

    I have three of those motors.

    Thoroughly clean the carb, and the jets need special attention, some carb cleaner and an air nozzle will get it done.

    Sometimes you'll find a cork gasket on the high speed jet, these will eventually crumble and plug things up. Get a rebuild kit, they're cheap.

    I wouldn't assume the carby needs pulling down because the engine hesitates when put in gear, it just sounds like the idle speed is too low, and can be adjusted by changing the position of the stop that the linkage rests against when throttled back.

    It won't hesitate and die from a low idle, dying during acceleration is typically caused by a lean condition.

    Four strokes do frequently die if the idle is too low though.

    The easiest way to tell is pull the choke out slightly and see if it improves the performance.

    If it were an older model (points) the cause could also be from worn components, the timing will shift and it may not start, or run well.

    Put it this way, adjusting the idle stop takes seconds, and definitely the first thing to try, I have had several two strokes that would occasionally "die" when put into gear in the water, because the idle speed was too low.

    His is dying when he tries to accelerate, then needs the choke to restart. He indicates it starts and runs ok with the choke on, but once warm it will run at low speed or high speed, but not in between.

    And occasionally dies when idling in gear.

    Seems like it's the usual problem,gummed up jets.Gummed up jets will cause all the settings to alter.
    Strip the carb,remove as many jets as possible,and use carb cleaner on all the carb.
    When you remove the mixture screw,run it in gently to the stop point,then count the turns it was in.
    Remove and clean it.The point you turn the screw out for the initial starting point is one and a half turns out.
    once the carb is back on,warm up the engine to working temperature,at idle,find the fastest idle by turning the mixture screw.
    This will give you the basic mixture setting,once on the water,adjust it to suit the boat(maybe won't be needed.)
    Don't forget to clean the fuel inlet in the bottom of the bowl.
    If the motor has the 'pillar type pull cord'it can be a tricky job,because you have to move it to get one of the nuts off that hold the carb on the manifold.
