    Why reinvent the wheel?

Toyota based hybrid package? Nanni Diesel builds and sells em:cool:

Wud you direct to the "Toyota based hybrid package" you are referrring to? I Googled Nanni hybrid and got a French guy talking about a hybrid and a drawing of a hybrid but could't discern "licensed by Toyota" or "Synergy Drive" anywhere. What type of hybrid is this thing?

    It's really kind of simple

It's a hybrid system designed from the ground up for boats. You start out with a Nanni TDI-1.439 (Toyota 1KZ) diesel engine. You put a dual purpose stator & rotor coil set in the flywheel housing along with an in out clutch between it and the engine. Next is some proprietary electronics that control changing the coil set between regeneration mode and propulsion mode. Throw in a big bank of batteries to store the generated power. When your cruising under diesel power the coil set generates electrical power that is stored in the batteries. Or you can turn off the diesel disconnect the in out clutch and use the coil set as an electric motor and cruise on the battery power you saved up. System makes sense in parts of europe where you have to run real clean and quiet in tight areas and can kick in the diesel when you get to open water. I think the system is more like an updated version of a WW2 U-Boat:cool:

I know this is an old thread and all ... but turning a boat with a gyro is easy as cake, and the boat will be one of the most stable you've ever seen ... just put the flywheel horizontal, rotating around a vertical axis. ;-)

    Cheers!

hybrid boat conversion completed see photos here

I converted a 32' silverton yacht to be a hybrid with a gen 2 prius drivetrain.

it runs, ( slow) about 9 mph but I have all i need for lake use.
here is a link to the photos and the build process

    and here also

Isn't that originally an outdrive boat? It's not clear from photos if you retained the outdrive(s)?

9 mph is kind of slow, but of course I see the idea in experimenting with an older boat that has been damaged.

Wouldn't a series hybrid (a.k.a. diesel-electric + batteries) set up give the same speed but more time on batteries only? As well as being simpler.

Where do you get a Prius drivetrain from?

    silverton hybrid

    no it was a twin v8 I/O
my company repairs prius's and we have wrecked cars for parts.
I am the only person it has to please, and where I live there are only small lakes and the ohio river.

we use the boat for overnight trips and a swim platform.

the conversion cost was low because I performed the work myself

    Sorry, terminology confusion

Inboard/Outboard drive = outdrive = sterndrive .....depending where you reside :)

Did you retain the original drives and what is the set-up now that you (I assume) only have one engine?

What is your battery capacity available for the electric motor?

I hear Tesla is about to start selling a home battery pack version of their car batteries that may be lighter than other options.

Received a message from Tesla a month or so back. Their boat interests are for high speed.

The 2012 Camry synergy battery (nickel hydride) is still a low capacity unit, and is fast-in/fast-out. The 18650 Li Ion cell I believe was the building block for Tesla's banks. I heard they used 7000 in each car. Probably there's a better cell in 2015. The point being that to get the storage capacity up, dispensing with the ICE means no longer a hybrid and using the ICE means not enough storage. The Highlander used two battery packs. Hybridizing Li Ion or Li Phosphate batteries with the Synergy ICE could be possible. Maybe the new hybrid Toyotas have changed battery chemistry?
