Robert Biegler: Paravane-stabilised canoe at Loch Lomond, August 1999

Ally folding canoe, stabilised by Paul Ashford's anchor dog paravane design, as described in Amateur Yacht Research Society booklet 114 "Ultimate Sailing: The Hapa Revisited". The wind only got up to about 10 knots throughout the whole week, just enough to notice that the boat absolutely did not heel when other boats would, it just went a bit faster. The paravane was attached forward of the sail's centre of effort, and the boat steered well from on the wind to a broad reach by pulling the paravane back to the appropriate degree. I could never make the boat tack or gybe without paddling, and swapping over between port and starboard paravanes was a nuisance.
