      a reverse gear is simpler. Poor hydrodynamics. A rotating pod is more efficient as used on harbour pushers.

      A rotating pod is also a lot more expensive and can't be as easily retrofitted on many existing boats. Moreover, a reverse gear alone will not have as quick a response or offer same steering benefits.

      As for the added drag: there are trade offs in everything.
